flute (Latin)

Vertical groove or channel running along the shaft of the column. At Doric columns flutes are segmental and separated by arrises, while at Ionic columns they have partially elliptical section and are separated by fillets.

forum, pl. fora (Latin)

Square, open space in Ancient Roman cities. Initially – the market square, later (during the Roman Empire) – designed monumental squares expressing the power of the emperors.

frigidarium (Latin)

Cooling room in the Roman thermae, equipped with a pool with cold water.
