27.08.2010

Commission from the National Institute for Immovable Cultural Heritage (NIICH) adopted the results from the archaeological excavations at the Ancient Stadium.

Today, a commission appointed by the Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov, made a tour of the underground space of the Ancient Stadium for acceptance of the results of the archaeological excavations that were carried out within the project BG 0041, financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism.

In the sectors surveyed in the outer and inner face of the fortification wall were discovered earlier constructions that belong to the pre-Roman cultural stratum. The remains are from a Thracian settlement existed between 3-4 century BC. It is a new, unknown to science fact with outstanding contribution in studying the topography of the Ancient city of Philippopolis and the stratigraphy of the pre-Roman city - considers Maya Martinova-Kyutova - leader of the team that conducted the excavations at the Ancient Stadium.
